“If you live in America, chances are good that your next door neighbors believe the following: the inventor of the laws of physics and programmer of the DNA code decided to enter the uterus of a Jewish virgin, got himself born, then deliberately had himself tortured and executed because he couldn’t think of a better way to forgive the theft of an apple, committed at the instigation of a talking snake. As creator of the majestically expanding universe, he not only understands relativistic gravity and quantum mechanics but actually DESIGNED them. Yet what he really cares about is “sin,” abortion, how often you go to church, and whether gay people should marry. Statistically, the chances are that your neighbors believe all that – and they can vote.” – Richard Dawkins
|Below is a list of some things that Christians believe taken from Christianity.com. The original statements are in italics, and my responses to them are in bold beneath each one. A Christian friend of mine dared me to refute each one. Little does he know, my blasphemy knows no bounds!1. God created all that is seen and unseen
Christians believe that God is the creator of all people, the world, the universe, and everything seen and unseen. This is based on various Bible passages, including the Bible’s book of Genesis…..
3. Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary
Virgin births are not unique to Christianity. Dozens of gods were born through virgins before Jesus. In fact, if your god wasn’t born by a virgin he would have probably been seen as unworthy of worship by many ancient people. So Jesus followed suit.
Unfortunately, there is NO historical evidence of any of this. None. Not even a record of execution by the Roman government. In fact, Jesus isn’t mentioned by a single scholar writing during the time he was alive (pretty remarkable for someone who performed miracles and attracted large crowds.) Jesus could have very well existed, but it is just as likely that he didn’t. This absence of evidence should trouble believers especially because many of them are otherwise reasonable people who would never accept anything baseless as true in any other part of their life.
Again, only the bible tells you so and the bible is NOT a historical document (the first people to teach me that were priests in catholic school.)
6. Jesus rose again (the Resurrection)
Jesus wasn’t the first god to come back to life. In fact, the parallels between the stories of the much older Egyptian gods Horus and Osiris with that of Jesus are striking. This has convinced many scholars that those stories inspired the Jesus myths. Also, human beings invented “kingdoms.” It does not follow that a place that has always existed would be structured the way some humans structured their societies.
7. Jesus ascended into Heaven
“Ascended into heaven?” Fewer ideas show the ignorance of the ancient world more obviously than this. This shows that to the ancients, god and heaven were in the sky. We know that is not true. Perhaps they are located somewhere in outer space? So far, we have pointed our telescopes in many places and no sign of heaven. Today’s Christians apparently still think god is in the sky or in space. They look up and raise their hands to the sky when they pray and they point to the sky when they kick field goals and hit home runs. If there is a god, they would be better off searching for him in the realm of quantum theory than overhead. Also, what would a matterless being like god need with a “hand?” If Jesus is seated, this implies he has a chair or something to sit on. Humans invented chairs. Why would there be chairs in heaven and furthermore, why would something without a butt or legs need to sit down?
Okay now this is some silly stuff right here. First, when Jesus spoke of the last days he was telling people that it would be soon, within their lifetimes. Much of this apocalyptic language is actually referring to a forthcoming freeing of the Jews from the control of the Roman Empire. (The mark of the beast 666, actually spells “Nero,” the Roman emperor, in numeric Hebrew; which was popular at the time of the writing of Revelation.) The Son of Man will appear in the sky, because where else would he come from in the ancient world? Apparently, he will ride on clouds and he plays the man–made trumpet! Awesome! Seriously, you really believe this shit?
Spooky! Here is the fear and control that any religion that has survived as long as Christianity must have. This God is so insecure that he NEEDS us to believe in him or else he won’t “save” us. He provides us with no evidence of his existence, yet he wants us to suspend our cognitive reasoning and logic which he GAVE us and which we need to survive, in order to believe in him. We also have to admit we are lousy even though some of us are not.
10. Anyone can have salvation
How nice of god. However, this scripture appears in ROMANS. What would you expect? ….
